Laying on the soft grass that covered the fields that made up their homes, she let out a sigh as she rested her head down on her front paws and closing her eyes for a second, she silently listened to the sounds around her. However, one particular sound she picked up, seemed to reach her hidden ears the loudest...it was the sound of breath.
Turning her head on her paws a bit, Maltese glanced just right of her, where her younger sister Almaria could be seen sleeping. Maltese stared at her sister for a little bit longer, the restless Rynegaliyen turned her head away...she just couldn't understand it. Why did Almaria care of her so much, couldn't she sense the feelings that she held for her, the way she resented and hated her? Was she just pretending that she didn't sense those feelings that she held, or was Almaria really that oblivious to them. Whatever it was, it drove Maltese crazy... she just couldn't understand why her sister was so close to her, nor could she understand why she cared for her so much, while she on the other hand...hated her sister, she was envious and jealous of her sister, to the point that she hated her with almost every being of her soul. It was a hatred that wasn't without a reason...a reason that involved that accident...whose fault was her own...
Standing to her feet for a moment, Maltese restlessly walked around in a small circle as she attempted to fall back to sleep, hoping that she wouldn't disturb her sleeping sister fro her slumber. She didn't need her worrying about her. In fact, she'd much rather prefer if she kept her distance from her. Maltese wanted nothing to do with the kindness that Almaria had to offer her.
Letting out another sigh a second later, she gave one last spin, before laying back down in the soft grass and resting her head on her paws once again, before finally drifting off to sleep as well as to a memory she'd rather not remember...

"Look Maltese! Look!" a young Almaria called out as she laid at the top of a grass hill with her older sister. Lifting her head up quickly, a young Maltese glanced up just in time to see a large shadow passed over head. The shadow belonged to one of the large Rynegaliyen's in their clan.
The two sisters watched silently with wide eyes as the older Rynegaliyen flew above them, turning and gliding through the air gracefully. Everything it did and every move it made seemed like a graceful dance to the young sisters, as they watched the Rynegaliyen do the one thing that all young Rynegaliyens dreamed they would once do as well--fly.
"Flying looks so much fun." Almaria said as she glanced away from the sky and back towards her older sister Maltese. "The feeling of the wind against your fur and the joy of being up so high--the elders say its a wonderful feeling." she gave an innocent smile a second later.
"...I bet." Maltese said as she continued to stare at the sky. The more she stared at the sky and thought about the possibility of flight, she more she wanted to learn how to do so, and the more she wanted it, the faster she wished it would happen. Unfortunately when it came to Maltese, patience was not one of her strong points.
"I have an idea!" Maltese suddenly said, quickly catching Almaria's attention.
"What? What?" Almaria asked curiously, she always loved her sister's ideas, she always thought of the funnest things as well as the coolest adventures whenever they were bored.
"Let's practice." Maltese said. "I'm sure that if we practice, then we'll be able to fly in no time."
"Practice flying? That sounds fun!!" she said with a wide smile. Before leaping to her feet and preparing to run down the small hill at top speed, before leaping into the air and spreading her wings into the air. Only to land face first in the ground a second later.
Maltese, who had been watching from the top of her hill couldn't help but laugh as she watched her sister spit out grass from her mouth.
"You're turn!" Almaria called out with a smile. "Come on Maltese! Run as fast as you can and jump!"
"Alrighty!" Maltese called down as she began to back up. "Here I come!!"
Once she was sure that she had backed up enough, Maltese gave a wide grin and charged forward--dashing down the hill at a fast speed, before leaping into the air as well, speeding her wings a second later--just like her sister had done before her.
For a short second, Maltese could feel herself lifted into the air by the wind, but a second later--just like her sister--she was dropped flat on her face.
"Patooie.." Maltese said, spitting out some grass as well, before glancing over toward her laughing sister.
"What's so funny?!"
"The way you fell." Almaria laughed. "You looked so surprised!!"
Maltese let out a growl, before thinking about it and beginning to crack up in laughter as well. Almaria was right, it was rather funny.
The two siblings ran about for several hours, but no matter what they did, they never seemed to get but a few inches off of the ground.
"...this is taking to long..." Maltese said as she struggled to regain her breath from all the running she had done.
"But Maltese..remember what Reine said, practice makes perfect."
"Well practice is boring!" Maltese said with a snort. "Besides, we have been practicing, and we haven't gotten anywhere--I think we need a different spot to practice."
"Like...?"
"The launching rock." Maltese said. "I've seen several flightlings practicing there."
"But Maltese we're not allowed there." Almaria said. "The only ones allowed there are flightlings, we're just groundlings."
"We're pre-flightlings." Maltese said. "I'm sure that we're allowed there because of that."
"...But..but..." Almaria tried to argue, but her sister was to stubborn.
"What's wrong? Scared?"
"No! It's just...i don't want to make Queen Reine upset."
"She won't be! She'll be so proud of us." Maltese gave a confident nod. "Especially when she sees how well we can fly."
Almaria opened her mouth to argue against her sister's reasoning, but it was already to late--Maltese was already running off in the direction of the launching rock.

Maltese arrived at the launching rock a few minutes later and gave a smile. She knew she could do it, she had seen several other Flightlings do it, so it couldn't be that hard.
Heading over to it, she quickly climbed up onto it and glanced over the edge, before giving a bit of a swallow. It was much high than it looked.
"...don't give into your nerves Maltese...you can do this." she said with a nod as she began to back up slowly and prepared to jump. Just before she ran forward, she glanced behind her to see if Almaria was there--but saw no one.
"Heh...chicken." she said. "You'll be the one whose sorry when I'm flying." she stated and quickly began to run forward.
"Maltese!!" Almaria yelled as she arrived at the launching rock, but she was to late. She arrived just as Maltese was nearly at the edge of the rock, and she knew she wouldn't make it in time to stop her--but she had to try.
Bolting forward without a second thought, Almaria ran after her sister in hopes that she would be able to stop her before the jumped.
"Maltese! Stop!!" Almaria yelled as she continued to run towards her sister, only to slam her feet to the ground and skid to a stop as she reach the edge, just as Maltese kicked off from the rock, launching herself into the air.
As soon as she leapt into the air, Maltese wasted no time spreading her wings. She grinned widely as she felt herself floated through the air.
"Almaria!" Maltese called as she glanced down towards her sister. "Look at me--" Maltese's sentence was cut off as a strong gust of wind suddenly caught the young Rynegaliyen's fragile wings. The pressure of the wind against her wings alone was enough to knock the poor Rynegaliyen off balance and send her hurling to the ground.
Closing her eyes tightly Maltese couldn't do anything to slow down the speed that the plummeting at, the only thing that she could be greatful about was the fact that they lived on the planes and there wasn't much for her to run into--besides the ground.
A second later, Maltese felt herself slam into the ground, she could feel the impact vibrating through her body as she crashed, knocking the wind from her lungs, before sending her tumbling across the grounds hard surface. As she was tumbling the fiction of her body against the tore at her left wing, ripping the fragile leathery skin that was lined each joint, and allowed her to fly...without it, she would never be able to fly again.
Several minutes after she had hit the ground, Maltese finally stopped tumbling, the battered and bruised Rynegaliyen let out a painful cry as she struggled to get to her feet, but her body didn't want to move, all she could do was lay there and hope that someone would find her.
Coming from the distance, she could hear the sound of her sister's voice. The one person who could have stopped her, could have kept her from jumping...but she didn't she wasn't there...
"MALT--"

"TESE!!" Maltese's dream was shattered as she realized that the sound of her sister's voice was coming from outside of her dream as well.
"Maltese!" Almaria called again in a worried manner as she nudged her sister with her muzzle. She had been woken up by the sound of her sister's whimpers and cries and quickly realized that she was having a bad dream. Ever since the accident, Almaria clung to Maltese like glue, fearing the thought of loosing her sister--like she may have that day.
Blinking for a few minutes, Maltese slowly lifted her head and glanced up--only to see Almaria's face in her own....at that very second, all the hatred and resentment that she held against her reach it's boiling point.
"WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP ME!!" Maltese roared out, completely catching poor Almaria off guard, causing her to fall flat on her back with a thud.
"I...I..I..." Almaria stammer as she stared at her enraged sister, who was snorting heavily at the point.
"..I..." she squeaked out again. "..I tried..."
Maltese blinked a second later as she slowly began to realize what she had just said. Staring at her sister wide eyed., she slowly began to back away.
"..I...I'm sorry." Maltese said, "...I need to be alone." with that said, the highly frustrated and confused Maltese ran off, hoping she would be able to, at the very least, calm down... the last thing she wanted to do was have Almaria find out about her truth feelings, she feared it would crush her...
-Edit- It's slightly edited, but not by much. xP

...love.

This story is about Maltese's accident. It just randomly came to me and I decided to type it up--for anyone who is curious about what exactly happened that caused Maltese to be placed in the state she is now.

These siblings our my favorite of all my Rynegaliyen characters--and sorry for the lack of proof reading....its 2:12 am and I wanted to get it up so I wouldn't forget it.

Please tell me what you think--thank you.
